Naturopathic Medicine
Naturopathic Doctors (NDs) are licensed by the Ontario government following successful completion of at least 7 years of post-secondary education and the North American Naturopathic Physician Licensing Examinations. NDs are primary care providers and may be considered as family physicians of complementary and alternative medicine. NDs treat all health conditions.
First appointments last between 60 and 90 minutes so that all your symptoms may be explored and a root cause determined. Appointments for integrative cancer care may last 120 minutes.
A physical exam and blood or urine testing may be conducted. Treatment programs may include an individualized combination of nutrition, botanicals (herbs), acupuncture, supplements, homeopathy, counselling, or referral to another healthcare practitioner. Treatments are
designed to assist the body’s own healing mechanisms according to the most up-to-date, scientifically-proven medicine and ancient healing knowledge.
3 Naturopathic Doctors are located at KIHC. For more information about Naturopathic Medicine, please review the biographies of our naturopathic doctors, and follow the corresponding
internet links.
Intravenous (IV) Treatments
Intravenous (IV) therapy delivery of nutrients to the body is an excellent way to support
your body during chronic illness and for conditions in which the digestive tract does not absorb nutrients optimally. IV administration bypasses the digestive tract and delivers nutrients right to the cells that require them. It also enables higher levels of nutrients to be delivered than is possible by supplementation with pills.
Aside from the initial prick, IV treatments are often painless. They may be effective for a variety of conditions, including cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, celiac disease, neurological disease, autoimmune conditions, migraines, and fibromyalgia. Naturopathic Doctors who use IV therapy must complete accredited training programs and government certification examinations. IV therapies are conducted at KIHC by Dr. Jennifer Wheeler, ND.
Massage Therapy
Massage therapy is a vital part of any health prevention program and may be very beneficial in the treatment of acute and chronic injury or pain, including back pain, whiplash, headaches, sciatica, tendonitis, and fibromyalgia. Research demonstrates that massage may improve sleep, mental focus, stress management, and heart health. For more information about massage therapy, please visit the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario (CMTO) website.
Acupuncture & Traditional Chinese Medicine
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a distinct medical system refined over 3000 years that includes the art and science of acupuncture. Relative to more Westernized versions of acupuncture, application of the wisdom inherent in Asian acupuncture enables healing of nearly all health conditions by balancing systems in the body such as hormones and immune function. Supporting the body’s capacity to heal includes addressing the root cause of illness, which produces long-term results. Current scientific literature repeatedly demonstrates the efficacy of these treatments, including for relief of pain and addictions, and for treatment of low fertility, hot flashes, and depression.
Osteopathic Manual Therapy
Osteopathy is a patient-centred system of healthcare that addresses the cause of dysfunction and pain rather than the symptoms. Osteopathic Manual Practitioners use their comprehensive knowledge of anatomy and physiology to identify and ease restricted or constricted areas of the body so that normal function can resume. In this way, osteopathy supports the body’s self-healing processes and promotes optimal body function. Treatments are gentle and can be applied to all diseases and dysfunctions, including those affecting musculoskeletal, respiratory, cardiovascular, digestive, reproductive, and nervous body systems. Patients are encouraged to visit the Ontario Association of Osteopaths for additional information.
Osteopathic Manual Practitioners, DOMP, are accredited by the Canadian College of Osteopathy following successful completion of a 5 year osteopathic program and a clinical research thesis that is approved by an international jury.
Initial appointments may last 1.5 to 2 hours and include evaluation of your medical history, physical examination, and treatment. Follow-up appointments are usually 1 to 1.5 hours. The frequency or recommendation for follow-up treatments varies according to your individual health needs and goals.
Athletic Therapy
Athletic Therapists are healthcare practitioners who assess and treat
muscle and joint injuries and conditions to support optimal healing.
They may also educate their clients about injury prevention, including
through postural education, supportive taping, and equipment selection.
For more information about Athletic Therapy, please visit the Canadian
Athletic Therapists Association (CATA) website.
Advanced Reiki Therapy
Natural Therapeutic Touch is a non-invasive treatment modality that facilitates your body’s ability to heal and relax. Clinical research supports its effectiveness in managing and healing stress, chronic pain, anxiety, and injury. Natural therapeutic touch at KIHC is offered by Carol Belanger, who integrates the more familiar techniques of reiki with ongoing advanced methods acquired during her 4-year Bachelor of Science program at the Barbara Brennan School of Healing.
First appointments include a health assessment and 1 hour treatment. Clients rest fully clothed while lying or sitting. Follow-up appointments generally last 45 to 60 minutes.
Psychotherapy
Psychotherapy is a form of therapy based on talking with a
professional about anything from general discomfort in life to anxiety,
depression, addictions, couple, parenting or historic issues. There are
many different things that bring someone to therapy. Sometimes people
feel they are not coping well, or a family member or other professional
has suggested that they talk to someone. All topics are acceptable
although some therapists specialize in certain areas.
During psychotherapy it is important that you feel accepted and heard
by your therapist and that you attained something from the session,
such as insight or resources to further understand your situation.
Professionals who practice psychotherapy may come from a variety of
disciplines, including psychiatry, psychology, and social work.
Psychotherapy services at KIHC are offered by Kaye-Lee Pantony, who
completed 10 years of postsecondary education in the field of
psychology.
Psychotherapy is often covered by extended health care plans.
Medical Testing
Laboratory services available to patients through OHIP can be limiting. As licensed healthcare providers, Naturopathic Doctors may access not only mainstream laboratory services, but also services provided by advanced laboratories throughout Canada and the United States. These thorough assessments are invaluable tools that will help you understand your current health status and monitor your improvement during treatment. Blood, urine, saliva, and stool analysis is available to analyze food allergies, digestive health, nutritional status, hormone balance, and more. For more information, including about our in-house laboratory testing, please view our website, here
